Hyde's first visit to The International Stadium since 1990 was a successful one. The facilities at Gateshead are superb, an 11,750 capacity all-seater stadium, with a running track and a first class recreation hall built into the back of the main stand. The first real chance of the match arrived on 19 minutes when a Gateshead breakaway was stopped by Gus Wilson's superb tackle. Simon Yeo took on a Gateshead defender on 22 minutes and crossed for Peter Band to bundle the ball over the line from close range, with a little help from defender Scott. Band then went close when he headed Dolby's corner wide of the back post. Kurt Edgington made a great save down low to his left after a Gateshead free-kick was met by a flick header. In the second half, Edgington's long clearance was met by Yeo who instead of chipping the advancing goalkeeper Swan, fed the ball to Haw who miscued his shot wide of the empty goal. On 67 minutes Simon Yeo played a one-two with Haw before calmly clipping the ball past Swan. Hyde were awarded a free-kick on 76 minutes after a good run by Dolby, while Gateshead were organizing their defensive wall, Steve Haw took a quick free-kick and caught Swan off-guard to score an easy goal. In the last few moments, Yeo beat two defenders before firing over and Swan blocked well when Richardson played in Yeo.
