Steve Tobin lashed home a loose ball on 10 minutes following poor Hyde defending to deservedly put Leigh in front. A Moncrieffe centre put in Yeo and then Dolby but the close range shot was blocked for a corner which Yeo then headed against the crossbar. After chasing a long ball, Keith Evans almost doubled the visitors lead but his shot hit the side netting. Neil Matthews collected the ball on the edge of the Hyde penalty area on 22 minutes and placed a precise shot in the bottom left corner of the goal to put Leigh two up. On the stroke of halftime a goalmouth scramble in the Leigh penalty area resulted in The Tigers doing everything but score before Leigh eventually cleared. The Tigers thought they had scored a goal early in the second half when following a corner the ball was cleared off the goal line to which the linesman raised his flag and then put down again, many of the spectators parallel with the line said it was NOT over and his decision was correct. Dolby went close with a curling free kick and then Rodwell, Dolby and Annan combined well but Brenchley couldn't add a finish to the move. Dolby got it right with his second free kick bursting the net, he must have been, however, the only person in the stadium not to see the referee's arm in the air indicating an indirect free kick. Steve Haw scored Hyde's consolation goal after 88 minutes after Moncrieffe had crossed from the right. |
