Hyde were outclassed tonight but gave a performance of potential and could be pleased with themselves. Peter Smith broke away for Crewe on 29 minutes and calmly slotted past Paul Taylor to put the visitors ahead. Hyde went close with a Simon Yeo volley which flashed past the post from eighteen yards. Jody Banim was also close with a twenty yard free-kick going the wrong side of the upright. In the second half, a surging run from Kojoe Taylor got Banim involved and his curling shot was beaten away by Welsby in the Crewe goal. Peter Band was the next Hyde player to go close as he hit the side netting from Banim's cross. Peter Smith showed quick feet in the penalty area on 60 minutes to extend Crewe's lead but Jody Banim found his range from 20 yards on 78 minutes to pull one back for Hyde. All that was left was for our brilliant Centre Half Paul Taylor (deputising for our injured keeper Graham Bennett) to make a point blank save from Crewe's substitute before Peter Smith wrapped things up three minutes from time with his hat-trick.
