The league cup kicked off with Aspinall heading a cross goalwards but O'Donnell saved well down to his right.Trafford got into the game more as the half progressed but they were restricted to three long range efforts, each of which was off target. Gus Wilson made a surging run from the back before laying the ball to Howard, the cross was met by Wilson who forced a great save from O'Donnell but Simon Yeo was on hand to tap home the rebound on 45 minutes. Trafford equalised on 47 minutes from the penalty spot, Bennett pulled down Murray and Garry Vaughan dispatched the spot kick. It wasn't long until Hyde went back in front, Mark Howard beat a defender and his cross was headed in by Simon Yeo on 52 minutes. Yeo almost completed his hattrick when Banim played him through but O'Donnell spread himself at Yeo's feet to make a good save. A defensive mix up led to Trafford coming level again on 59 minutes, Paul Taylor's backpass putting Bennett under pressure and all the Hyde keeper could do was kick against David Lowe who gleefully watched the ball roll into the empty goal. Bennett looked nervous a few minutes later when he fumbled a free kick but recovered to grasp at the second attempt. Hyde's last real chance was when Paul Taylor headed over from Hall's free kick. There were further efforts from Band and Brenchley but these didn't greatly trouble O'Donnell.
