Grantham ended a 3 game losing run with a 2-0 win over Hyde United.
With wind advantage in the first half Grantham began at a high tempo with Danny Meadows and twice Ben Harris getting in good crosses in the opening 5 minutes. Hyde’s first shot came on 9 minutes but Scott Spencer’s effort from 30 yards was straight at Jake Turner. Spencer threatened again 2 minutes later but his turn and shot from the edge of the box went over the bar. Grantham continued to press with the Hyde defence doing the simple thing and putting the ball out for a number of Grantham throws deep in the Hyde half. Micky Emmott saw his cross from the left curl narrowly wide of the far post and Ben Harris shot at Hyde keeper Wilcynski as Grantham sought the opening goal. Harris again threatened on21 minutes after he was played in by Ben Saunders but he delayed his shot and Wilcynski saved. Grantham had a scare on 25 minutes when Hyde striker Scott Spencer charged down a Jake Turner but was adjudged to have used his hand and Grantham were awarded a free kick. Hyde should have taken the lead 34 minutes. A defensive slip by Grantham allowed Spencer a run at goal. The Hyde striker rounded Turner but with the goal at his mercy saw his shot hit the bar and Grantham escaped. Turner was called into action again on 42 minutes when following a corner he managed to turn over a close range header from Hyde’s leading scorer Ayton Bevins. Grantham ended the half on the attack with Rhys Lewis seeing his header go narrowly wide and then Wilcynski saved Ben Saunders chip from 20 yards.
Grantham began the second half again on the offensive. Lee Shaw just failed to get onto the end of a Ben Saunders flick on in the opening minute. Ben Saunders was twice crowded out in the box and the same player saw his cross shot narrowly go past the far post. Lee Shaw cut in from the left on 60 minutes but his final cross eluded everyone. Hyde countered and it took a clearing tackle from Michael Hollingsworth to stop them on 61 minutes. Grantham introduced Greg Smith for Ben Saunders on 66 minutes. Hyde went close on 71 minutes but with Turner at full stretch the ball went just pat the near post. Grantham went ahead on 76 minutes. Emmott curled a cross into the near post and substitute Greg Smith got in front of keeper Wilcynski to turn the ball home. Grantham didn’t sit back on their lead and on 79 minutes Ben Harris saw his strike deflected away for a corner. Grantham introduced Jack Becket for Jamie McGhee on 85 minutes. Grantham added a second goal on 86 minutes when Greg Smith played in Lee Shaw who was then brought down in the box and Danny Meadows converted the penalty to put Grantham two up. Grantham brought on Carlos Vagoroso for Lee Shaw in the final minutes of the game and it ended with Grantham two goal winners.
