Hyde FC: David Carnell, Josh Brizell, Adam Griffin, Andrew Pearson, Luke Ashworth, Alex Brown, David Poole (Stefan Cox), Callum Byrne, Scott Spencer (Daniel Douglas-Pringle), Phil Jevons (Robbie Williams), Tunji Moses. Subs not used: Ashley Frith, Kelvin Lomax. Sent off: Andrew Pearson. An agonising injury time equaliser from Braintree’s Brad Quinton denied Hyde all 3 points in their first ever Blue Square Bet Premier game. Hyde were 2 goals up at half-time and looking comfortable, but an altercation in the tunnel led to Andy Pearson being sent off, and this changed the game. On a blistering hot sunny day in Essex it was a nervous opening 10 minutes from Hyde but they soon took control and Adam Griffin had a shot just over. An ankle injury forced David Poole off and Stefan Cox came on for his debut. With his first touch he beat 2 players before being brought down. Phil Jevons stepped up 30 yards from goal and his free-kick was diverted in by last season’s leading scorer Scott Spencer. Hyde were looking right at home in a higher division and moving the ball around well on and doubled their lead in the 37th minute when Spencer chased down a loose back-pass from Ryan Peters, nipped the ball off home goalkeeper Danny Naisbett before being brought down by the same player. The referee Mr Knowles awarded a spot kick which Spencer converted confidently. Braintree, last season’s surprise package, had a penalty shout turned down right on half-time when Matt Paine and Andy Pearson tangled. The pair had words and this appeared to spill over in the tunnel when Pearson was shown red and left Hyde a man short for the second half. The Tigers replaced Phil Jevons with Robbie Williams and while they were still reorganising the home side pulled one back just 3 minutes in when half-time Substitute Kain Sheppard pulled one back with a header which looped in over a stranded David Carnell. Braintree were dominating possession but the Hyde defence were standing firm with Tunji Moses and Luke Ashworth in particular outstanding. As the clock ticked over to 90 minutes a corner from the right led to Carnell being blocked off and the ball falling to Quinton who thundered the ball home to leavethe Hyde players, who had put in a great shift, on their knees. |
