Hyde went out of the Manchester Premier Cup at the Butcher’s Arms on Monday but not without giving the home side a fright and on another day and a little luck could have got something from the game.

The Tigers gave a debut to Ashley Young, but were without Dale Johnson, Matty Burke and Chris Lynch, who had all picked up injuries on Saturday.

Having started well, Hyde went behind after 28 minutes when Ciaran Kilheeney crossed from left. Russell Saunders got a hand to the swirling ball, but could only find Dam Gardner’s head and the ball finished up in the net.

Hyde equalised on 58 minutes when Shaun Whalley, captain for the night, found space on the edge of the area and chipped Paul Phillips into the far corner. It could have been even better for the Tigers as James Vaughan headed against his own bar minutes later with Phillips beaten.

The game changed on a critical decision on 72 minutes. Domaine Rouse clearly fouled Steve Halford running towards goal, but the referee would have none of it and Kilheeney had an easy task of putting the ball in the net.

Neil Tolson brought on Scott Mooney and Rob Turner and the Tigers continued to give their all but couldn’t find an elusive equaliser despite Mooney going close and Turner finding the net, only to be thwarted by an offside flag.

To rub salt into the wounds, the enigmatic Rouse set up Kilheeney for his second in injury time to give a flattering scoreline for the home side.
