Despite fielding a weakened team due to suspension and injuries and having two players ineligible, Hyde were still unlucky to go out of the Cheshire Senior Cup at Moss Lane on Tuesday.

Altrincham opened the scoring on eight minutes when Damien Reeves followed in a free kick after a brilliant initial save from Russell Saunders. However, the Tigers equalised four minutes later when Dean Stott side-footed home Tom Manship’s corner.

Marcus Calvert then went close for Hyde before Altrincham’s left back, Ryan Brown found himself unmarked in the area to put the Robins back in front on 32 minutes.

Disaster struck for the Tigers immediately after the restart when they contrived to lose possession from the kick-off and Damien Reeves gained possession wide on the right. His goal-bound lob was half saved by Saunders, but the ball finished up just over the line and was spotted by an eagle-eyed Assistant.

Dale Johnson thought he had pulled one back for the Tigers on 75 minutes when he rifled home a beauty only to be thwarted by a very late flag from the Assistant. It looked a very close call but the Tigers continued to push forward, and Stott, revelling in his new midfield role, shot home from the edge of the area with ten minutes remaining to grab his second of the night.

Despite some late pressure, Hyde couldn’t find an elusive equaliser but were certainly not disgraced by their more illustrious opponents in an open game
