Started his career as a youth player with Tottenham Hotspur but then joined hometown side Barnsley. He was loaned out to Swansea City and Mansfield Town but was released in 1997 and joined Emley. His form for The Pewits earned him a move to Ayr United where he scored 49 goals in 78 games. A move south beckoned and he went on to have goalscoring spells with Stockport County, Chesterfield, Notts County, Shrewsbury Town and Bury.
