Cliff Roberts had enjoyed some success with Northwich Victoria in the Conference, keeping the side in mid table despite working with limited resources. His reign at Ewen Fields got off to a poor start with a 4-1 reverse at Whitley Bay and he never really got the fans on his side after that. Amid calls for his resignation following poor results, he did resign from his role in October 1992, citing the clubs worrying financial position and the deteriorating artificial suface as his reasons. Roberts could have remained in the role until the end of his contract, but made the decision to forfeit any monies due to him and even took charge of a final game at Horwich RMI after his resignation, his players responded with a 5-3 win. |  |
