Hyde progressed to the next round of the Manchester Premier Cup with a comfortable victory over Oldham Borough at Ewen Fields on Monday.

Two goals in each half were enough to see Hyde through but it could have been many more if not for the heroics of Callum Hennigan in the Oldham goal, who made a succession of excellent saves.

Perhaps more important for the Tigers was that Tom Manship came through the game unscathed, after being out with injury for most of the season. Hyde should have taken the lead early on when Manship was brought down just inside the area, but Hennigan saved Shaun Whalley’s penalty.

Hyde were on top throughout but the first goal didn’t arrive until 36 minutes when Scott McNiven scrambled the ball home. Whalley made up for his earlier miss with an absolute screamer two minutes before the break.

Dale Johnson added a third on 55 minutes, although he probably didn’t know much about it as it went in off his back and then substitute Chris Rimmer got the fourth with his first touch
on 65 minutes.

Overall this was an excellent work-out for the Tigers in an entertaining game well refereed by Martin Rawcliffe and good preparation for tougher tasks ahead.
