Darren Edwards hit a hat-trick and secured the points for Gloucester in this basement battle at Ewen Fields. Hyde went into the game on the back of a three match unbeaten run but were always up against it once Edwards had put the visitors in front on six minutes after Kyle Clancy’s clearance rebounded of him into the net. Clancy was deputising in goal for Russell Saunders, who had broken his hand on Monday

The Tigers equalised a minute later when Kev Sawyer failed to hold Ashley Young’s shot and Kevin Holsgrove slotted in the rebound. Just before the break, both teams surprisingly missed penalties. First Clancy saved Darren Mullings spot kick on 40 minutes after Edwards had been brought down by Lynch and then a minute later Holsgrove was brought down in the area, but Andy Smart’s kick struck the bar and rebounded to safety.

Dale Johnson thought he had put Hyde in front on 47 minutes after a superb turn and shot, but the referee amazingly brought play back and gave Hyde a free-kick on the edge of the area much to the annoyance of the home fans. Edwards put Gloucester back in front on 65 minutes and two minutes later Hyde thought they should have had a penalty for hand-ball when Manship’s shot was deflected. After that Gloucester took control of midfield and Mike Symons should have made sure on 85 minutes after he rounded the ‘keeper but shot wide.

Edwards did make sure in injury time when he scored a superb cameo goal after a 60 yard run down the left.
